ASPIRE College Mentorship Program

Work through Sunset’s College & Career Center to work one-on-one with Sunset juniors & seniors to support their post-high school plans.

Not ready for this level of commitment? Look for College & Career Center volunteer opportunities throughout the year, including mock interview, essay editing and hosting college visits. Ensure that you are a part of Sunset’s volunteer database in order to receive volunteer communication about these valuable events.

  • Meet with students 3 times per year to help them explore career & education opportunities for post high school, choose the best fit, and apply and pay for their education choice.

    Log meeting notes in the Student Check in Sheets.

    Record hours worked in BSD Volunteer system- MyVolunteerPage.com.

    Attend volunteer training sessions.

    Learn the College & Career Center resources.

    Complete a Volunteer Survey at the end of each school year.

  • Pass a background check and be an approved BSD Volunteer.

    Ability to work in an ambiguous role. Every student's needs are different and there are multiple places to find information.

    Patience, sensitivity, and ability to work with teenage students.

    Reliable and dependable.

  • Formal training: 6-8 hrs per year for new volunteers and 2-3 hours per year for returning volunteers.

    Informal training: familiarizing yourself with available online resources.

    Time with students varies based on number of students you are mentoring.

    Estimate three hours per year, per student; includes setting up meetings, attending meetings, researching, and email communication with students.
